Want Calm NOW? Sit down for the 'count'!
Feelings of overwhelm, anxiety and un-calm are not nice and can leave us feeling helpless. Some stress triggers might be familiar and predictable (city traffic, a tantrum-ing toddler) and other causes may be quite drastic and come out of the blue.
To help bring you back into balance and ease, here's an effective pranayama (breathing) technique. It's simple too - if you can breathe and count, you can do Sama Vritti (equal breathing). Sama Vritti is a Sanskrit phrase, 'sama' meaning 'even, smooth, flat, equal or same' and 'vritti' means 'fluctuations or modifications'. So the phrase suggests a smoothing of the fluctuations of the mind into stillness. As the name indicates, it is said to create 'evenness' or balance in the flow of thoughts. Yes, please!
Ready to try?
To begin, sit or lie comfortably and simply notice yourbreath. After a few smooth, natural rounds of breathing through your nose, introduce a count:
:: Breathe in to a steady count of 4
:: Breathe out to a steady count of 4
Take a few rounds, then check in with how you feel - hopefully a little calmer!
This practice is completely portable and a great investment for your 'Calm Toolkit'. Let me know what you think,
Wishing you a calm, magical day, Bronni x
