Roll up, roll up, folks!
Today's tip is easy-beau-breezy and you can do it right away. Excited?? OK, clear some space, roll out your mat and grab abeach towel. (Likely out of the cupboard if you're a Novacastrian like me and the shark-scares have kept you away from the beaches..)
Roll up your towel from the short edge and place across your mat, about 1/3 from the top. Sit your booty in the middle of the mat, and slowly lie down. Don't forget a little supportunder your head. Aahhh...Your mid-back should be over the roll, or, another way to explain, the roll should be under your bra-strap areas (you get it too fellas, right?) Bring chin to chest so the back of the neck is long, sink the head into the mat, soften the face, the jaw, the eyes... aahh.
You may not get the 'aahhh' right away. Take a moment tosoften yourself around the roll and melt into the mat. Experiment with what feels best for you - legs extended, or bent with feet grounded like me? Let the breath flow. Now play with the arms. Have them a little away from the body, palms up, or try a 'halo' above the head. Again - what feels best? Play around, then settle into your 'mini backbend' for a good couple of minutes. Before coming out of the pose, carefully remove the towel, ease the shoulder blades away from the mid-line, then lie flat for a few breaths. Your back may feel brand-new!
Our bodies spend a lot of time folded forward - hunched over the computer, steering wheel, picking up after children etc etc - which is why our spines really love to back bed - this opposite action helps bring us back into balance, easing stiffness andsoreness. This open position also facilitates full, easybreathing. Emotionally, backbends can be uplifting andenergising, making this pose is a wonderful pick-me-up too. Enjoy!
Wishing you a calm and up-lifting day, Bronni x

I'm Bronni. I love to lie down. On a mat, perhaps with a blanket and yoga bolster. A 20 minute session can help me go from chaos to calm... These musings are all about finding calm, Restorative Yoga and it's amazing benefits.
