Roll it out (your mat!) at Home::
Have you tried some yoga all by yourself at home yet?? Go on! It’s oh so worth it! A home practice will help strengthenthat ‘yoga glow’ you feel after your teacher-led class, you’ll start to feel more in-tune with what your body and mind reallyneeds from yoga, you can spend as little or as long as you like in your favourite poses and when you practice regularlyyourself the effects of each led-session don’t have a chance to wear off before you return. Here's a few tips to consider when rolling out your mat at chez YOU.
Location, location, location - choose an appropriate spot in your home for practice. An uncluttered space in the living room (if that simply means moving kids toys out of the way, so be it!) Make sure the temperature of your space is ‘just right’. Outside can be nice too.
Have everything you need handy prior to your practice - mat, eye pillow, blanket, cushions etc. WHOA... Hold the phone -don’t have your own props?? Time to get creative - use rolled blankets or sofa cushions for a yoga bolster, wrap 2-3 novels together in a pillowslip to act as a block. (Gosh, I’ve used whatever kids clothing is lying about as an eye-covering and a packet of building blocks as a block..)
Amp up the ‘Omm-biance of your space by minimising distractions - phone off, tv off, fridge shut etc (mine beeps when you leave the door a fraction open!)
Have a rough plan of the poses you’ll practice. Start with somestillness and quiet to slow the breath, choose a few poses you are familiar with, and always finish with a Basic Rest Pose (Savasana). I’m delighted when students want to practice at home so I’m super happy to suggest a few poses or write out abasic sequence. Or Google it. Yup, if you want some yoga to help you sleep or ease a cranky back, let your fingers do the tapping..
Be realistic about how long you can spend in your home practice and how often you’ll roll out your mat - even 5 minutes every other day will bring benefits. Yes really.
Most importantly, just start.
Of course, if you’d like some guidance to create a home sequence, I’d love to help. Let’s chat, or check out my new online program ‘Create Your Calm’ designed to get youstarted on some Restorative Yoga poses you can do at home to soothe aches and stresses. Take a peek here:
